Jameela Jamil’s ‘I Weigh’ movement puts the spotlight on self-worth

Jameela Jamil has made quite a name for herself in Hollywood, gaining a reputation for speaking out against the status quo and fronting a movement that questions the real value of a person.

What is I Weigh

It all began when the actress, activist and previous T4 presenter, Jameela Jamil, stumbled across an Instagram post depicting the weight of some of the famous Kardashian and Jenner family members and asking users ‘Which weight are You?!?’ in what can only be perceived as an attempt to critique people’s bodies and lower self-esteem.

She responded with this image

…demonstrating how women’s worth cannot possibly be weighed in kg or pounds or any other numerical form. From this, the I Weigh movement was born and in just a few weeks the Instagram account gained 15,000 followers. Now around 415,000 people follow the account and thousands of people have joined in and shared their own images. Below you can see a few examples:

Jameela Jamil defines I Weigh as a body-neutral and life-positive movement that encourages everyone to look past appearances and find their true value and worth in their personal achievements, friendships, family and all things that bring them joy.

Although initially focused on the social pressures that women face and the unrealistic standards they are expected to uphold, the movement has since branched out and emphasises that everyone faces pressures to conform and look a certain way. Instead, Jameela suggests that we all need to tell these social standards that put us down and make us feel less than we are to do one!

let’s all do ourselves a favour and fill our social media with images of successful, strong, beautiful people who inspire us to look beyond what is skin-deep by sharing their true value and worth in ways that are far beyond measurable.

I Weigh is a reminder amongst the sea of filtered photos of perfection, that real beauty comes from who we are, what we do and how we treat each other.
