The warmer weather is a wonderful thing but with the sunshine comes a season that can be very harsh on your hair. To keep those locks, soft, shiny and healthy you need to be proactive and keep on top of your hair care with these top tips!
1) Get a trim before the season starts
It’s a fact that hair does grow faster during the summer so, get ahead and remove those split ends in preparation for all that healthier, summer growth! You might even need a mid-season trim to keep on top of it!
2) Use products that offer sun protection daily
Just like your skin, your hair also needs some tender, love and care when it comes to exposure to the sun. Sadly, the UV rays can alter your hair colour, cause dulling, split ends and breakage so you need to keep your locks protected with UV resistant products.
3) Wash your hair every 3 days or more
Overwashing can dry out the hair and wash away all your much-needed natural oils. If you’re finding leaving your hair unwashed unbearable then try soaking a cotton ball in witch hazel and dabbing it along your scalp to dissolve some of those natural oils that make your hair appear greasy.
4) Rinse with clean water before and after swimming
Wetting your hair before swimming will stop your hair absorbing as much chlorine and saltwater and similarly a quick rinse afterwards will help reduce how much your hair intakes.
5) Don’t brush your hair when it’s wet
Your hair is weaker and more susceptible to breakage when it is wet so avoid putting a brush through it. The best thing to do is use a wide-tooth comb when it’s fully dry to untangle any knots.
6) Use less heat
It might seem like an obvious one, but since your hair is getting more than enough heat elsewhere during the summer you might want to reduce how much extra heat you put it under. Your hair will thank you greatly if you just let it dry naturally and avoid hot styling tools!
7) Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner
Lock in extra moisture at every opportunity to keep your hair soft and healthy. By picking shampoos and conditioners which focus on locking in extra moisture you’ll find this helps avoid your hair getting bristle and dry.
8) Try loose comfortable hair styles
Keep your hair off your shoulders and better controlled with loose hairstyles, don’t pull too tightly though since that can cause breakage. If you want to go one step further then try and incorporate hats or scarfs into your summer look for some extra sun protection.
9) Use a tiny drop of argan oil
Keep your hair smooth and shiny with a daily dose of argan oil. This will help strengthen your ends and lock in extra moisture – but remember, don’t use too much or your hair will get weighed down and look extra greasy.
10) Try oil rinsing
Pick an oil that works best for you, for example, coconut, olive or avocado. Then make your chosen oil a part of your washing routine. Shampoo your hair then smother the oil into your hair from root to tip, let it have at least 10 minutes to absorb then wash it out and finally, add conditioner to enhance your hair’s natural oils and moisture.
